Web Search Evaluation – My First Days on the Job

I’ve already written about what it was like to apply to become a web search evaluator (read the post here). What has it been like to actually do the job? In this post I’ll tell you how I have found it so far.

Getting on board

After passing the exam for Appen (formerly Leapforce) for the web search evaluation work, I was keen to get started with some paid tasks. There was some good old admin to do first. I had to sign a load more documents, then set up my computer and phone to be able to do the tasks correctly.

Setting up Chrome

One of the things I had to do was to start a fresh Chrome installation with no extensions. This was a problem for me as I use Chrome with several extensions attached to do website testing. I found a way round it be creating a new Chrome profile just for my web search evaluation work.

When I clicked on my user icon in the top right, I chose the ‘Manage People’ option, then ‘Add Person’ in the bottom right. I wrote in Leapforce as the account name and chose an avatar before selecting ‘Add’. That was it! My new Chrome profile set up especially for web search evaluation was created.

I found that I had to go into Chrome’s settings to remove all the extensions which were loaded on there by default. This was easy to get to by selecting the 3 dots in the top right of Chrome, then clicking on ‘Settings’. After that, I clicked on the top left menu button, and selected ‘Extensions’. From there I was able to delete all the pre-installed extensions without removing them from my normal Chrome profile. I could easily switch between profiles by clicking on the user icon.

There was a special app I needed to install in order to complete tasks on my phone. I was sent an email which guided me through this process and I didn’t have any issues.

Learning to use the platform

There was a lot to take in from the dashboard I was presented with when I logged in. It took me a while to look through it all and to understand where all the features lived. I found out that I needed to do more training tasks in order to receive more paid tasks. I could still get access to some paid tasks though.

The paid tasks I completed were different to the ones I had done in the exam but they used the same skills. I opted in to receiving notifications when tasks were available. After completing tasks I was able to add the time I had spent on them to my invoice which will be submitted at the end of the month.

My thoughts so far

I hadn’t expected to need to do the extra training but I have found it worthwhile to improve my rating capability. It also helped me to become more familiar with the task types I had not tried yet. There were a couple of areas I was unsure about but Appen were really quick to get back to me and answer my questions. Even as a novice, I have found I have never been short of tasks. I really like the work so far and it is so easy to fit around caring for my daughter. The tasks don’t take too long so I can just pick 1 or 2 up whenever I have a few minutes.
